Second Frost Farm is a small scale, high production, MOFGA certified organic vegetable operation and lacto-fermentory! The farm currently has just over one acre of land in vegetable production, including 4 unheated high tunnels and 2 seasonal caterpillar tunnels which allow us to produce nearly year round. We utilize low-till and majority human-powered farm practices as we work towards our vision of improving soil health, building climate resilience and nourishing our community- both on and off the farm! We sell the vast majority of our farm products through our CSA and at two local farmers’ markets where we work with other vendors and the Maine Federation of Farmers’ Market to expand food access in the mid-coast.

Being a member of a farm crew here is a social job. Each member of our small team should expect to work closely with farm owners and other crew members. We strive to have a collaborative team that maintains strong communication throughout the bustling season. Employees can expect to participate in regular check ins. Second Frost Farm is a production farm with a lot going on all the time. This means more often than not, there are greens spinners spinning, high tunnel fans buzzing and weed whackers keeping the fence line clear. An ideal candidate: -brings a positive attitude -is reliable and shows up on time -is proficient at multi-tasking -is detail oriented -is able to learn and maintain pace -communicates well, including following directions and advocating for their own needs -works well as a team & stays motivated when working on their own -comes motivated to develop new skills including efficiencies & good body mechanics -is willing and able to work outdoors in the variety of weather conditions a Maine spring, summer and fall can bring -has experience working on a farm or other relevant physical labor and/or outdoor work experience -has experience working farmers’ markets and/or equivalent fast-paced retail or restaurant setting -has a valid drivers license -is interested in contributing to our farm’s success

Benefits

Our farm crew works 8-9 hours per day (with 8 hour days in April and October onward). All farm positions include a paid 15 minute morning snack break and an unpaid half hour lunch break. We also highly encourage all crew members to partake in “chocolate break” (or whatever you fancy for a little boost) mid-afternoon to up energy and morale through end of the day. Second Frost Farm opts into unemployment insurance and workers comp insurance. We offer our employees 1 hour paid time off for every 25 hours worked. Accrued, unused PTO time is paid out upon completion of the farm season. Employees have free access to “seconds” produce. We also frequently send employees home with some of each new crop we harvest throughout the season.
