To be added to the waitlist\, email events@mofga.org. \nLearn to topwork (graft) new disease-resistant\, cider\, dessert or heritage varieties onto your existing trees! Topworking is the type of grafting that is done when you have an established tree and you’d like it to produce a different variety of fruit.  \nThis is an incredible way to expand the type of fruit you grow and improve the quality of your orchard or backyard fruit trees over time. Learn about how to topwork scions (sticks of 1-year old wood of your new variety) onto your existing trees. We’ll talk about the tools and supplies you’ll need and delve into the most effective ways to top work fruit trees. \nThis workshop will be taught by Laura Sieger\, orchardist at Fedco Seeds\, and held at Pleasant Pond Orchard in Richmond\, Maine.  \nThis is an outdoor workshop\, and participants are encouraged to wear close-toed shoes\, long pants\, and sleeves. There are indoor restrooms available. Feel free to contact us with any questions about accessibility. In the event of severe weather\, the workshop will be held on Sunday\, May 17. \nThis year\, we are happy to announce that we are able to offer classes in our Organic Orcharding Workshop Series for free\, thanks to the Transition to Organic Partnership Program. \nQuestions? The date has been updated to May 20. Join MOFGA’s Crop Specialist\, Caleb Goossen\, for a discussion on organic management of common pests in the vegetable garden. Caleb will start by sharing strategies used to minimize the presence of pests from the outset using cultural practices such as promoting the presence of “beneficials”. But sometimes pests show up anyway\, despite our best efforts or during particularly challenging growing seasons. So\, Caleb will also discuss what can be done when pests emerge. Click here to learn more About the speaker: Caleb has a bachelor’s degree in plant biology and sustainable agriculture from Hampshire College and he completed his PhD from the University of Vermont\, where he studied the fatty acid content of storage crops. He farmed organic vegetables in Vermont for nine years before graduate school. He also has experience with organic heirloom seed production and organic orchard maintenance on farms in New Zealand. In this year’s Gather & Grow series\, garden tour hosts will share information about their gardening practices in general\, and through the lens of climate change adaptation. \nAbout the homestead: \nJoin Sam and Kim for a tour of their thoughtfully restored 6-acre homestead\, centered on growing nutrient-dense food and building a resilient\, regenerative lifestyle. After moving full-time to midcoast Maine in the spring of 2021\, they took on a long-abandoned property and\, over the past five years\, have brought it back to life.  \nToday\, the homestead supports a diverse range of systems. Sheep are raised for meat\, dairy\, and fiber\, with a focus on rotational grazing to rebuild soil health and revitalize pastures. Pigs and chickens are pasture-raised\, contributing to both the farm’s productivity and ecological balance. Visitors will see no-till market gardens and a kitchen garden that provide an abundance of vegetables throughout the growing season. This harvest is preserved and stored in a traditional root cellar\, supporting year-round nourishment. The homestead also includes fruit trees\, beekeeping\, and established herb gardens\, all contributing to a holistic\, nutrient-dense food system. Rounding out the farm’s infrastructure is a recently installed grid-tied solar array\, providing renewable electricity and supporting the homestead’s long-term sustainability. This tour offers a grounded look at the process of restoring land\, building soil\, and creating a productive\, multi-generational homestead from the ground up. \nThere will be a boot wash on-site\, for livestock biosecurity purposes. \nQuestions? Email events@mofga.org. \n\n Photo provided by Sam & Kim of Stonewall Farm.\n \n Register Here\n \nRegistration info: Tours in the Gather & Grow Series are kept free\, with support from participant donations; and this year\, with support from the Davis Conservation Foundation.
