Topworking is the type of grafting that is done when you have an established tree and you’d like it to produce a different variety of fruit.

This is an incredible way to expand the type of fruit you grow and improve the quality of your orchard or backyard fruit trees over time. Learn about how to topwork scions (sticks of 1-year old wood of your new variety) onto your existing trees. We’ll talk about the tools and supplies you’ll need and delve into the most effective ways to top work fruit trees.

This workshop will be taught by Laura Sieger, orchardist at Fedco Seeds, and held at Pleasant Pond Orchard in Richmond, Maine.

This is an outdoor workshop, and participants are encouraged to wear close-toed shoes, long pants, and sleeves. Their vegetable gardens span about 1/4 acre and consist of 21 different beds, which are managed on a 7-year crop rotation plan and with low-till practices. They have also cultivated many perennial plants, including a home orchard, which features various fruit trees, vines, and shrubs. Composting has been key to their approach to sustainable and successful gardening. Tom manages three different composting systems: vermicompost bins, larger compost piles, and leaf mold piles. Gain some garden inspiration on this tour, while learning a bit about composting and other climate-smart gardening practices.

Questions? Email events@mofga.org.
